Master, Council of Serampore College
Bishop Dr J S Sadananda of the Church of South India (CSI) – Karnataka Southern Diocese is the new Master of Serampore College (University). He succeeds Dr. K. Rajaratnam, who held the post since 1992 and relinquished it from March 26, 2010.
One of India’s first universities, Serampore College was founded in 1818 at Serampore near Kolkata & granted Royal Charter by the King of Denmark in 1827, awarding the status of a university, similar to those functioning in Copenhagen and Kiel in Denmark, to confer degrees in any branch of knowledge. Since 1918, under an Act of Bengal Legislative Assembly, Serampore College became the only University, granting degrees in Theology for the ministers of all Protestant and Orthodox Churches in India. Today, more than 50 theological colleges & research centres from all over India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are affiliated to Serampore College (University).
Bishop Dr Sadananda brings along more than 35 years of teaching and administrative experience. He was the Secretary of Board of Theological Education in India, for more than a decade. Since 2005, he served as the President of the Senate of Serampore College (University) and Chairperson of Board of Theological Education of Senate of Serampore College. An eminent educationist, multilingual scholar and an able administrator, Bishop Dr Sadananda hails from Mangalore, Karnataka.
