SENATE OF SERAMPORE COLLEGE (UNIVERSITY)
FACULTY OF THEOLOGY, DEPARTMENT OF RESEARCH

A Department of Research is established under the care of Senate of Serampore College (University), incorporating Research and SATHRI programme of the Senate and BTESSC.

Department of Research functions within the structure of Senate of Serampore College (University) with the approval of the Council of Serampore College. The officers and the functionaries in the department, as per requirement, are appointed by the Executive Committee of the Senate with the approval of the Senate. The Research Department works for the following functions:

  • Co-ordinates and guides formal research at the doctoral level under the guidance of the Committee for Research and with the cooperation of doctoral students;
  • Organizes programs that are aimed at strengthening the relationship between theological education and the churches, strengthening inter-disciplinary of church and society;
  • Facilitates non-formal research through consultations, seminars, conferences, symposia and colloquia and research projects.

Doctor of Theology
The Doctor of Theology program of the Senate of Serampore College is an endeavour to promote advanced theological education and the formation and equipment of leadership personnel for the Ministry and Mission of the Church in the contemporary religious, social, economic, political and the cultural realities.

Objectives

  • to promote critical and creative research in specialized fields of knowledge related to the life, heritage and mission of the Church as well as contextual Christian faith, and to advance the frontiers of knowledge;
  • to promote the formation of well equipped Christian teachers, leaders, communicators, writers and scholars;
  • to provide leadership for shaping the self-understanding and structures of the Church, which are relevant for fulfilling its God-given vocation in the world;
  • to encourage independent and original research using integrated and inter-disciplinary approach in theological education.

Admission

1. Eligibility

  • He/she shall be a person who has previously obtained the M.Th degree of the Senate with a minimum of `B’ grade or person who in the opinion of the Committee for Research holds an equivalent qualification.
  • He/She shall fulfill the above requirement implicitly as there is no age bar for a person to be admitted to the D.Th program.
  • In exceptional cases, a person who while without a Serampore M.Th in First or Second Class or an equivalent degree has previously published creative research of a high scholarly standard and/or holds a M.Phil, or M.Litt., degree in First of high Second Class from an Indian university or a degree at least equivalent to this from an India or foreign university with knowledge in theology may be deemed sufficient for registration to D.Th program.

2. Entrance Requirements

  • The Centres shall conduct their own entrance tests and interviews and select the candidates from among those successful completed the above. The entrance test conducted by the Centres shall include:
    • A Research Paper
    • A Book Review
    • Personal interview to test the language skill, aptitude for research and so on.
  • The candidates shall be admitted to the degree program in the branch they had completed in their M.Th studies.

Dissertation
Each candidate for the award of degree of Doctor of Theology (D.Th) shall submit four copies of his/her thesis to the Dean of Research, through the respective doctoral centres not earlier than the prescribed minimum period of three years and not later than the prescribed maximum period of seven years after the candidate has been registered for the program.
